In short, going to Dubai is a dream trip. But where exactly is it on the world map? 🤔

THE GEOGRAPHY OF DUBAI

I often hear everything and anything about the location of Dubai when I discuss it with my friends 😅

THE COUNTRY IN WHICH DUBAI IS LOCATED

Dubai is an emirate in the Middle East that is located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The country in which Dubai is located is therefore "the United Arab Emirates".

Its capital is Abu Dhabi and is located about 80 miles (130 km) southwest of Dubai.

The UAE has seven emirates: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm al Qaiwain and Ras el Khaimah.

THE CONTINENT ON WHICH DUBAI IS LOCATED

map dubai

These 7 emirates are located in the northern hemisphere: at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa.

More precisely, Dubai is located between Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman.

The continent on which Dubai is located is therefore Asia!

Here are Dubai’s geographical coordinates for the most meticulous:

Latitude: 25.0657, Longitude: 55.1712
25° 03′ 56″ North,  55° 10′ 16″ East

As the crow flies, Dubai is 7,049.104 miles (or 11,344.433 kilometers) from Washington (not much different from the distance in plane: 7,053 miles - or 11,350 km).

A non-stop flight takes about 14.5 hours. You will land at Dubai International Airport (AITA code: DXB) which is located in the north of the city. It is one of the three busiest airports in the world and is served by the subway (very convenient!).

DUBAI: AN EMIRATE OR A CAPITAL?

Dubai is the name of the capital of the emirate of the same name. Dubai, the city, is the capital of Dubai, the emirate, which itself is part of the United Arab Emirates, a country.

Dubai, the capital, is a huge city (with a surface area of about 22 sq mi, or 35 km²). It is the main city of the emirate of Dubai, and also the most populated: it is home to more than 3.3 million inhabitants with a density of 318 hab./sq mi (or 46,183.7 inhabitants per km²).

Dubai is located between the Rub al Khali desert (representing around 403,891 sq mi, or 650,000 km² of territory between the UAE, the Sultanate of Oman, Yemen and Saudi Arabia) and the Persian Gulf coastline. The city occupies 31 miles (50 km) of sea frontage. The waters are shallow and of an incredible turquoise blue. There are many beaches available for water sports as well as artificial islands such as Palm Islands, where rich celebrities have made their home.

THE CLIMATE IN DUBAI

climate dubai

Dubai enjoys a tropical climate with annual temperatures ranging from 68°F to 113°F (20°C to 45°C) on average. It is mild in winter and very hot in summer: the thermometer can quickly exceed 122°F (or 50°C), with high humidity.

It rarely rains (about ten days a year) and the city can be swept by a few sandstorms.

The best time to visit is between October and April.

IS THERE A TIME DIFFERENCE WITH DUBAI?

The time zone in Dubai is the Gulf Time Zone: GMT/UTC+4 all year round (there is no time change!).

The time difference in Dubai is therefore 8 or 9 hours with Washington D.C. (GMT/UTC-4 or GMT/UTC-5 - depending on whether we are on eastern daylight time (EDT) or eastern standard time (EST) in North America.)

You will have to take into account the time change from the USA. So, think to add:

  • 8 hours in summer (from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November)
If it is 12am in Washington D.C., then it is 8am in Dubai.
  • 9 hours in winter (the remainder of the year, from November to March)
If it is 12am in Washington D.C., then it is 9am in Dubai.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LOCATION OF DUBAI

Since it's always a bit confusing for people, here are the answers to the questions I get most often! 😄

IS DUBAI A COUNTRY?

No! Dubai is the name of one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, which are themselves a country. But Dubai is also the name of a city, which is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai.

WHERE IS DUBAI LOCATED?

Dubai is located between Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman. To the west of the United Arab Emirates is Saudi Arabia, and to the east is the Sultanate of Oman. To the north is the Persian Gulf.

IS DUBAI A CAPITAL CITY?

Dubai is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. One could compare an emirate to a state in the US. In all, there are seven emirates that make up the country of the "United Arab Emirates".

And that's it for this article on "Where is Dubai located?"! I hope I was able to answer as many of your questions as possible 😊
